The Basque Region is situated in the north of Spain and in the full European Atlantic Axis and is formed by three historic territories with its own autonomous administration: Araba (capital: Vitoria/Gasteiz), Gipuzkoa (San Sebastián/Donostia) and Bizkaia (Bilbao).
Its privileged geographical location, in the south of Europe, in the green north of Spain and next to France, gives the Basque Region access to the rest of Europe. With 197 Kilometers of coastline on the Catabrian Sea, a great variety of nautical sports are practiced; the Road of Santiago is the first European cultural route that crosses the interior and the coast of the Basque, and where important traces of historical times are conserved: chapels, churches, monasteries, brick roads, a whole world of culture, religion and past; with a thousand-year-old native language: Basque; International Festivals of Movies, Folklore, Opera and Jazz. Since October of 1997 with the opening of the Guggenheim Museum of Bilbao, the Basque Region became a main tourist destination, and has a gastronomic offering recognized as one of the most prestigious in the world.
