The industrial production of the Basque Country has been diversifying. Although the activities derived from metal are very significant (from the production of steel to machine tools) other sectors like the chemical, petrochemical and refinery contribute significantly to the Gross Domestic Product. New technologies have been gaining prominence, with the development of sectors like industrial electronics and nanotechnology. The basque administration has been actively promoting and supporting the activities of R+D and Innovation and large-scale projects involving robotics and biotechnologies, among others.
In short, basque companies manufacture capital goods, as well as consumer goods and other intermediate products. A diversified industrial network allows basque economy to generate higher relative wealth than spanish average and a higher productivity rate than the rest of Spain.
As demonstrated in the following table, the importance of basque industry against the total production of Spain is very significant in a substantial number of sectors.
